This particular client had great information on their website, but it was only that - information. The copy they had written for themselves was extremely corporate and not very user-friendly, so they brought us aboard to add a conversational tone ...

Loans administered by:
Kiva - loans that change lives
Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach that man to fish, and he'll eat forever.

But loan that guy enough money to buy a refrigerated truck, and he can sell fish all over the country, employ dozens of people, and add to his local economy.

We're in business to make money, pure and simple, and we do a pretty good job of that. But if this planet we call home is ever going to work in the way it should, with everyone having an equal chance at success through hard work and determination, then the way we do business has to change. At Unreel Media, we decided to do our part, not by making donations to non-profit organizations, but by loaning money to developing and third world entrepreneurs, so that they too can have the chances we in the west take for granted.
That's why we started the UM International Development Fund. The UMWDF (or as we like to call it, 'the good karma fund') allocates 5% of all Unreel Media profits to a micro-loan organization called KIVA, which allows those in the third world and developing countries to borrow money from people like you to fund their business ideas. The borrowers repay the loan according to a schedule worked out with Kiva and their partners, and when the money is repaid, it is then reloaned to other borrowers, all without extortionary interest rates or massive overhead.
Because no bank in the world will lend an unemployed man in Tanzania $400 to buy a couple of breeding cows, microcredit organizations are often the only way people in these areas have a chance at ever working their way towards self-reliance. What's more, microcredit loans have a 97% repayment rate, because the people borrowing the money understand that in paying it back, they help their friends, family, and neighbors get future loans, and as a result, the entire community often takes responsibility for any bad debts.
As far as the folks at Unreel Media are concerned, that's money well spent on our part. If we can help a Palestinian man start a construction company, or a Ugandan woman become a fishmonger, or a young Honduran guy open a barber shop in his front room, then we're doing our part to leave this world a better place. And, hopefully, our clients will get in on the act.
Current loans include:
  • Uganda: Food seller, peanut butter maker, maize store, water supplier, clothing store, groundnut paste maker
  • Honduras: Shoe store, barber shop, retaurant, hot dog stand, clothing store
  • Cambodia: Tuk Tuk driver, grocery store
  • Palestine: Construction company
  • Tanzania: General store
  • Kenya: Dairy farm
  • If you'd like to make a donation to the UM International Development Fund, you can do so by clicking the button below.
Alternately, head to KIVA directly and make some loans of your own.

It's one way you can make a difference. Remember, what would buy you lunch in the US, will buy a man in Africa a brand new future.
